Phuket Vegetarian Festival (Sept 27-Oct 5)

The annual Phuket Vegetarian Festival is coming up, and we are able to see and feel some of the effects of it. For one, you see white clothes beginning to line up in the stores. For 9 days (Sept 27-Oct 5), local residents of Chinese ancestry strictly will observe a vegetarian/vegan diet for the purposes of spiritual cleansing and merit-making. You can tell if they are participating by them wearing all white, or if they are seen performing in the streets/parades.

Sacred rituals are performed at many Chinese Shrines (there is one really close to my house) and temples. There are also many aesthetic displays like walking barefoot over hot coals, ascending ladders with bladed rungs and piercing the lips with very sharp and heavy objects.

The Vegetarian Festival started about 150 years ago in the Kathu district (where I live), where the majority of the Chinese tin mine workers were settled in Phuket. They formed such a large portion of the community. During the Chinese ninth lunar month, Phuket was hit with an epidemic of a fatal disease and the loss of many lives. Because of this, they began to observe a vegetarian diet and refrained from drinking alcoholic drinks, engaging in sex, quarreling, telling lies or killing. The epidemic ceased, and, every year since, the people of Phuket have continued to celebrate the festival.

Below are some pictures. I do warn you to look at it with caution. Most of what is pictured is not suitable for children to see. It will grab you and disturb you (at least it did for me).

Lately, my roommate and I have been having a hard time sleeping and we are both having some vivid and not pleasant dreams. We know it has a lot to do with the spiritual climate. We know this is a demonic festival. Please join us in prayer. These men and women do not know the truth and that they are worshipping a false idol.  They are willing to sacrifice, beat and toruture their bodies for the sake of tradition…..for nothing.

This is just a mini overview of this 9 day festival. It is very intensive and horrific. If you do not believe me, do some research for yourself. But from what I have found, it is dark, very dark. And we are a week away from it, and we can feel the change in the spiritual world.
